Installation is a matter of plugging in the right speaker, connecting this to the left speaker via the supplied cable (which is a decent length, enabling a wide stereo image) and hitting the 'on' button on the remote. The result is a 4.1 package, providing you can find somewhere to house the surround modules (many people will simply plonk them on the back of the sofa.) and remember to replenish their batteries when not in use. No cables are required – it packs an onboard battery that charges when connected to the main speaker. The upper section, with its real-wood top-plate and carry handle, can be disconnected from the bottom part (simply by lifting it off) and placed anywhere in your room while still disgorging audio. The stereo speakers are actually made of two separate units – and this is where the E5's flexibility comes into play. Still, in comparison to a speaker from a typical mass market all-in-one array, they look and feel suitably premium. The edges of the cabinets are gently curved and each seems a little lightweight (4kg) considering their dimensions.

This is probably larger than you might imagine – way chunkier than most 'satellite' speakers and more suited, aesthetically, to TV screens around the 50in mark than a 32in/37in. The two stereo speakers are clad in a cloth wrap, adorned with the Fidelio logo, and stand 400mm tall.

Onboard amplification, to the tune of 210W, is joined by 2-in, 1-out HDMI connectivity and aptX Bluetooth provision, making it a versatile proposition in terms of external sources.īuild quality and design generally impress, although with a £600 asking price I expect them to. The E5 is described as a 2.1 package, but it is more than just a bunch of speakers.

The E5 system reviewed here is similar to that 'bar, in that it provides wireless surround audio from a flexible design. Last year it released some highly-impressive open-backed headphones (the X1s) and its shape-shifting HTL9100 soundbar. The former still advocates Ambilight technologies and potent processing, while the latter has been attacking the domestic audio market with some neat ideas, under the Fidelio umbrella. And that still remains, despite the CE aspects of the brand now being split between two separate entities (TP Vision for TVs, Woox Innovations for audio, recently acquired by Gibson). Philips has always been a company known for its innovative ethos. The magni 3 + modi 3 are excellent, but far from being overkill to anything really. This 2.1 system offers genuine surround sound courtesy of detachable wireless speakers. That's what I liked about the X2HR, the VFM but am disappointed about the quality control.Īs a user of the X2HR the bass is not overpowering or too much at all.

It looks like Philips doesn't have it's quality control in order or they don't match drivers despite the variations.Ī DT1990 (with treble filter) is a more durable and well supported (in parts even after many years) headphone but 2x to 3x more expensive. Perhaps using some EQ (lower the bass) could help but can't check.

The elevated bass can be addressed by modifying the driver slightly but as I don't have one now I can't experiment. I tried 2 of those X2HR now and the 2nd one I bought for myself had a substantial (3dB below 1kHz) channel mismatch. The X2 is said to be bassier than the X2HR. But you probably wouldn't have bought a Philips if you were. I doubt you will be disappointed unless you're an audio die hard. I have them connected to a Schiit Stack "3", which is absolute overkill, but at least I know the DAC/amp are not causing quality issues. The bass is a little lacking for my preference, and there is a decent roll-off in the high treble range so that even movies/video are enjoyable. But that might also be because the X2hr are open back and my whole head doesn't get as warm when wearing them. I do prefer them to my DT770 that I've had for years. The sound quality seems good enough for me.

Take the pads off when you get the unit and double check the drivers for symmetry. I don't know if this is a rumor, but I heard some units shipped with the left driver reversed. I thought I was going to return them and spend another $250 to $500 more on something "better." The X2hr have been good enough. It's shockingly good value in my opinion. Just have to be way more careful when cleaning. so you can't really wash the pads and clean them like you can with more expensive brands. The pads are removable, but the driver screen/ear protector is attached and cannot be removed. It's super scratchy and you can hear it in the left ear (where it attaches). They aren't as heavy as this guy in the video is making it sound. They were a reasonable price and I was in the market for a new headphone. I just bought them at the end of November.
